Wind Where does it come from?
You
probably already know that heat rises. With weather this is
referred to as convective
transportation of heat. Steam rises,
smoke rises and even warm water will rise if the water around
it is cooler. As the heat goes upward, it takes air with
it. Thankfully, this warm air does not continue to rise forever.
The air comes back down eventually. If it did not, we would
be without air to breathe. On the other hand cold air sinks. Have you
ever felt a cold pocket of water near your feet in a pond
or lake? The opposite of heat rising is cooler air sinking.
The concept of warm and cold is relative. This means that
"cold" is with respect to the surroundings. If a
parcel of air is "cooler" than the air surrounding
it, then it will sink. Let's prove that warm air rises and
cool air sinks! Click on the experiment to see for yourself.
